Great Category Masters will always be seeking Category Adjacencies

Categories are becoming more niche and the power of adjacencies can pull in larger audiences one at a time. As a creator sequentially pulling in audiences idea by idea is the best way to scale.

There are 3 elements that should be remembered when fusing ideas into a category:

Start with a Metaphor — Plant on the Consumers Map 🗺️

A metaphor makes it easy for the consumer to correlate and plant the idea on their mental map

If someone’s category is cyber security — military strategy metaphors work really well in unpacking a complex idea which is the usual starting point. This settles the consumer by giving a familial anchor point.

It makes the consumer feel — “Ah this is not a hard read/video” I can understand it.

Put out Visual Evidence — Point Your Camera at Ground-Zero 📸

Visual is natural on nearly all platforms.

Run an example going as deep as possible to explain a complex idea. If inflation is rampant in a country like Sri Lanka, show a “Purse” made of Sri Lankan Rupees to highlight how bad the inflation has gotten. Show an image of the vendor who is looking for bills to stitch and sell.

That sort of visual story emphasizes a point without words.

Pour on the Context — Explain the Foundation & Concepts of the Idea 🧱

Now you have the consumer hooked!

Metaphors and Visual Examples have brought emotion and a human side to the idea. It’s time to roll out the foundational ideas and explain how it links to the category. If someone is talking about Cyber Security Threats — here is when the common threat types and their causes are explained in detail.

The consumer will sit through as their mind is buzzing with metaphors and visual evidence which is helping them connect the dots.

That’s how the flywheel keeps spinnin!
